The Mbabane derby has always carried a particular electricity but this latest instalment crackled with an intensity that reminded everyone why the fixture sits at the very heart of Eswatini football. Oh what a game!

From the opening whistle to the final act, it was an encounter rich in drama, edge and quality, ultimately decided by a single moment of sharpness.

In the end, it was Mbabane Swallows who emerged victorious, edging their bitter rivals Mbabane Highlanders 1-0 courtesy of a first-half strike from Manqoba ‘Nciba’ Vilakati.

The goal proved decisive, yet it told only part of the story of a derby that delivered fully on its promise. I can safely say that this match lived up to its expectations.

Both sides arrived eager to showcase their new signings and it was immediately apparent that this would be no ordinary league encounter.

The tempo was relentless, tackles were robust and the stands hummed as supporters from both camps urged their teams forward.

The match had the look and feel of a special occasion and indeed it was.

Highlanders, in particular, were a pleasure to watch. Their passing football was slick and confident, built on quick one-touch movements that repeatedly opened up pockets of space.

At one point, Swallows fans ran out of applause for their own team, captivated instead by the Highlanders’ slick ball movement and the clever interplay of their neat passes.

At times they looked irresistible, circulating the ball with fluency and purpose.

Their new recruits blended seamlessly into the system, adding depth, imagination and attacking intent and there was a clear sense that this squad now carries real potential as the season unfolds.

Swallows, however, stuck to their game plan. They dominated possession in the early stages, dictated the rhythm and pinned Highlanders back.

Chances began to arrive and as the pressure mounted, a breakthrough felt inevitable. It duly came when ‘Nciba’ reacted quickest to a rebound, striking decisively to hand Swallows the lead and tilt the balance of the contest.

That advantage did not turn Swallows into spectators. Whenever they broke forward, they did so with purpose, launching quick counter-attacks that kept Highlanders honest.

What occasionally let them down was the final touch in the attacking third, where promising moves fizzled out just as they seemed poised to deliver a second goal.

Despite trailing at half-time, Highlanders played with the relentless spirit of a raging Bull.

The drama intensified when Njongo Mazibuko was shown a straight red card, reducing Swallows to 10 men. In that moment, many inside the stadium sensed a turning point.

With a numerical advantage and considerable attacking quality, Highlanders appeared primed to capitalise. They poured forward with intent, probing patiently and pressing high up the pitch.

Swallows responded with resilience and organisation. Their defensive shape held firm, midfielders worked tirelessly and the new signings in particular showed commendable composure under sustained pressure.

It was a display of collective discipline that ultimately preserved their slender advantage.

The match was played before a healthy crowd, not the biggest the derby has seen but more than sufficient to generate an electric atmosphere.

Supporters played their part magnificently, backing their teams with passion and voice while maintaining a spirit of respect that reflected well on the occasion.

At full time, the narrow scoreline felt harsh on Highlanders, who could reasonably argue they deserved something from the contest.

At one point, a Highlanders player dribbled two Swallows players inside the box, only for his shot to be deflected out for a fruitless corner. By this stage of the match, Highlanders were completely dominating the match.

Even ‘Nciba’, later named Man of the Match, was generous in victory, praising Highlanders for their fearless, entertaining approach and acknowledging the stern test they had provided.

Credit must also go to the organisers and the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) for delivering one of the most entertaining Mbabane derbies in recent memory, despite less-than-ideal weather conditions.

Above all, it was a reminder of the enduring magic of this rivalry – fierce, passionate and on this occasion, thoroughly thrilling. This was the Mbabane derby at its very best.
