MATEO agency is set to launch a stripped-down concert series in collaboration with the United States Embassy at the Manzini library, American corner .
The initiative, titled Mateo Music: Music Library Concert, aims to provide a platform for authentic storytelling through music, spotlighting the country’s raw talent in an intimate setting.

Creative Director and the brains behind the concept Sisekelo Shawn said that the inspiration behind Mateo Music came from a desire to create a space where raw talent, authentic storytelling and the heart of Eswatini’s musical soul could shine without distraction
He shared that the performances were inspired by the renowned Tiny Desk concerts but reimagined through a Swati lens. The choice of the American Corner as a venue, according to Shawn, was deliberate.

He explained that it offers a unique blend of accessibility, quietness and simplicity.
It is a space that encourages dialogue, learning and expression all of which aligns beautifully with the goals of the series.

“Its library setting also metaphorically underscores the idea of archiving our stories and sounds,” he said.
Sisekelo Shawn shared their reason behind the vision.
“Stripped-down performances remove the excess and place the spotlight directly on the artist’s voice, lyrics and emotion. In these intimate settings, there is nowhere to hide and that vulnerability makes the connection between artist and listener more meaningful. It’s not about spectacle it’s about sincerity,” he added.

He said that artists are carefully selected based on their artistry, originality and the emotional depth of their music. According to Shawn, the series seeks out musicians who can carry a message and connect through powerful storytelling. He revealed that the artists that have been confirmed for the first two sessions were Rina and Celumusa.

“We want to capture stories of identity, resilience, hope and cultural moments that reflect the reality and beauty of life in Eswatini,” he said. “Whether emerging or established, we want voices that echo authenticity and move people.”
Although a launch date has not yet been confirmed, early rehearsals are already stirring deep emotions. Shawn shared one memorable moment where an artist expressed what the opportunity meant to them.
“One artist shared that this platform made them feel ‘seen’ in a unique way. It was as if someone was finally listening to their story without asking them to fit a mold,” he said.

Looking ahead, he said that he hopes to take the concept across the country and even beyond.
“Our vision is to eventually take the Mateo Music concept across the country, creating chapters in different regions that capture the diverse soundscapes of Eswatini,” he said. “We also hope to build an accessible digital archive that reaches global audiences, showcasing the brilliance of our artists on the world stage.” Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture Chief Executive Officer Stanley Dlamini said the initiative was a great idea that would help create a platform for creatives.

“I always say Eswatini is a home of true talent, such brilliant ideas will not only create a platform but will also put Eswatini on the map. Artists will be promoted as well as the country itselfas different people from all over the world will be part of the concert. Most importantly they will get to appreciate the raw talent,” he added.
