A woman from Nsangwini has lived to tell the tale of how her husband allegedly tried to kill her by stabbing, running her over with a car and strangling her.

This was allegedly during an incident that unfolded at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital.

The accused, Sonkhe Phiwokuhle Siyaya, has been indicted before the high court on two counts being attempted murder and contravening Section 77(1)(a) of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act 15 of 2018.

The matter was scheduled to proceed to trial before Judge Zonke Magagula, but was postponed to March 4.

According to an indictment filed by acting Director of Public Prosecutions Lomvula Hlophe, Siyaya is accused of attacking his wife, Fikile Msibi, on December 21, 2022, near the hospital.

On the first count, the Crown alleges that Siyaya unlawfully and intentionally stabbed Msibi twice below the ear and later knocked her down with a motor vehicle, thereby committing attempted murder.

On the second count, the State alleges that Siyaya strangled Msibi, thus contravening the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act.

The summary of evidence outlines testimony expected from eight witnesses.

The complainant, Msibi, is expected to testify that she was in an abusive relationship with the accused since 2020, marked by ill-treatment and accusations of infidelity. She reportedly left her marital home due to the abuse and returned to her parental residence.

On the day of the incident, Msibi allegedly went to Peak Nazarene Primary School to collect their children’s academic reports.

She is expected to tell the court that after informing the accused of her intention, he rushed to the school, took the reports and ordered her into his vehicle.

They drove to Pigg’s Peak town, where an argument ensued near a shop. It is alleged that Siyaya stabbed her twice with a long knife.

A passerby, Mfanzile Mavimbela, is expected to testify that he heard Msibi shouting for help from inside a red Toyota Tazz, opened the driver’s door and wrestled the knife away from the accused. He then assisted Msibi towards Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital as she bled profusely.

According to the summary, as they approached the hospital entrance, Siyaya allegedly drove the same vehicle at high speed toward them, knocking Msibi down and crashing into a wall near the screening area.

It is further alleged that Siyaya then attempted to strangle Msibi before security officers intervened and rescued her.

Duduzile Mabuza, who was manning the hospital entrance, is expected to corroborate the events, stating that she saw a bleeding woman being assisted into the hospital when a car emerged at high speed, knocked the victim down and hit a wall.

Police officers Ncansile Khumalo and Calsile Tfwala are expected to testify regarding the arrest of the accused at the scene and the securing of the weapon and vehicle involved.

Scene of crime officer Boy Boy Magagula is expected to present photographic evidence.
