SOCCER – The race to take charge of Sihlangu Semnikati has gathered momentum, with Belgian coach Luc Eymael formally entering the fray.
The experienced manager has submitted his application to the Eswatini Football Association, making his intentions clear that he wants to help rebuild and strengthen the national team.
Sources close to the process indicate that Eymael is not merely testing the waters but is fully committed to securing the position. His application signals a serious bid to take over a team currently searching for stability and direction.
Eymael himself confirmed his interest, speaking candidly about his motivation and belief in the potential of Eswatini football.
“Yes, I applied for the national team job. I have worked with players from Eswatini before like Justice Figaredo at Chippa United and we had a very good relationship.
He performed at a high level under me and scored important goals for Sihlangu. Seeing him no longer in the starting line-up is surprising. I believe there is talent in this country and I am confident I can help the team perform better on the international stage,” he said.
Taking a coach-centric view, Eymael’s pitch is built around experience, player management and a clear desire to revive confidence within the squad.
Holding a UEFA Pro Licence, he brings decades of coaching across Africa, where he has navigated high-pressure environments and delivered results with several clubs.
His résumé includes stints at teams such as Chippa United, Free State Stars, Polokwane City, AFC Leopards, Young Africans and AS Vita Club, among others.
At 65, Eymael combines experience with a clear sense of purpose. He believes Sihlangu’s struggles are not due to a lack of ability, but rather issues that can be addressed through structure, discipline and renewed belief.
Interestingly, Eymael could find himself competing directly with a familiar face, Selaotse Mosala, his former assistant. The pair enjoyed success together, most notably winning the Nedbank Cup during the 2017/18 season with Free State Stars.

Their shared history adds an intriguing subplot to the selection process.
However, they are not the only notable names linked with the position. Other reported applicants include Harries Bulunga, Anthony Mdluli, Christopher Ennin and Zdravko Logarusic, among others.
This diverse pool reflects the seriousness of the task facing the association as it seeks the right candidate to guide the national team forward.
Sihlangu currently finds itself under pressure following a series of disappointing results.
The situation worsened after a shock elimination by Eritrea in the preliminary qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The outcome has intensified calls for change and placed the spotlight firmly on the leadership of the association, headed by Peter Simelane.
For Eymael, this moment represents an opportunity, not just to take charge but to make a meaningful impact. His message is simple: he wants to help.
With his track record and confidence in the players, he believes he can restore competitiveness and pride to the national team.
Meanwhile, the Eswatini Football Association has maintained a cautious stance.
Communications Manager Muzi Radebe emphasised that the recruitment process remained confidential.
“Applications are being handled in a professional manner, just like in any organisation. Once the process is complete, the new coach will be unveiled.”
