Nsingizini Hotspurs and Green Mamba deserve full credit for booking their places in what promises to be a thrilling Ingwenyama Cup final set for May 3.

After a gripping afternoon of football at Mavuso Sports Centre on Sunday, the two sides emerged from fiercely contested semi-finals that showcased the very best of Eswatini’s game, intensity, resilience and moments of genuine brilliance.

The road to the final was anything but straightforward.

In the opening semi-final, Green Mamba had to dig deep to overcome a spirited Sea Birds side, eventually securing a 2-1 victory after extra time. The match had ended 1-1 in regulation time, a fair reflection of how evenly matched the teams were over 90 minutes.

Veteran striker Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa proved decisive, rising to the occasion with a brace that underlined his experience and composure in high-pressure moments. He scored once in regulation time and netted the winner during extra time.

Sea Birds, making their first-ever appearance at this stage of the competition, were far from overawed as they matched their opponents pound for pound. Their equaliser came through substitute Muzi Tsabedze, whose introduction in the second half injected pace and urgency into their attack.

Even in defeat, Sea Birds left a strong impression, proving they belong among the country’s football elite. Their consistency this season is further reflected in their second-place position on the league standings.

The match itself was a compelling contest, marked by tactical discipline and relentless effort from both sides. While Green Mamba edged it in the end, they were pushed all the way by an Izinyoni Zolwandle side that refused to back down.

If the first semi-final set the tone, the second elevated the drama even further.

Nsingizini Hotspurs, also known as Insingizi Yezulu, overcame Young Buffaloes in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, winning 6-5 after the match had ended 1-1 following extra time.

Young Buffaloes appeared poised for victory after taking the lead through Bonga ‘Owa’ Matsebula. They dominated possession for large spells and looked in control as the game edged towards its conclusion.

However, football often turns on moments of inspiration, and Nsingizini found theirs through striker Senzo ‘Mbhobho’ Ndlovu. His late equaliser, a powerful, clinical strike,  shifted the momentum and sent the match into extra time.

With neither side able to find a winner, the contest was decided on penalties. Nsingizini held their nerve, converting all their spot-kicks while Young Buffaloes missed one, enough to seal their place in the final.

Across both matches, fans were treated to football of the highest order. The atmosphere at Mavuso Sports Centre was electric, with supporters turning out in impressive numbers, adding colour and energy through song and dance.

Notable attendees included members of the royal family, Minister of Sports Bongani Nzima, and Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) CEO Khangezile Mabuza, alongside top football officials.

Equally encouraging was the absence of violence, highlighting the positive spirit in which the matches were played, a welcome sign for the growth of the local game.

Credit must also go to the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) for organising semi-finals that lived up to expectations and delivered memorable moments.

While there were some concerns regarding officiating, particularly in the first match, such challenges remain part of the game. What matters is continued improvement to match the rising standard of the competition.

Attention now turns to the final, already dubbed the ‘Green Final’.

With both Nsingizini Hotspurs and Green Mamba demonstrating resilience, quality and a hunger for success, fans can expect a fitting and spectacular conclusion to this year’s Ingwenyama Cup.

If the semi-finals are anything to go by, May 3 promises a showcase worthy of the occasion.
