SOCCER – Manzini Wanderers’ fate, whether they hang on in top-flight football or get relegated, will be decided tomorrow by their rivals Mbabane Swallows.

Wanderers host the capital city giants at Mavuso Sports Centre tomorrow under floodlights in Week 25 of the MTN Premier League.

If the hub giants suffer yet another defeat, they will be automatically relegated from Premier League football for the first time in their 69-year chequered history.

Established in 1957, Wanderers’ encounter with Swallows represents a moment of truth for the ‘Weslians’, but also for the country’s football as a whole.

In the 2025/26 MTN Premier League rules and regulations under Article 9 on promotion and relegation, it provides in Article 9.1 that:

“The member clubs that end the season in positions 14, 15, 16 on the log table will be automatically relegated to the NFD League.

The club in position 13 will also be relegated but granted an opportunity to contest the last slot in play-offs with positions 3, 4 and 5 in the NFD League.”

As things stand, the country’s arguably most supported club is rooted at the bottom of the MTN Premier League log standings with just eight points from 24 games.

A defeat against Swallows will mean Wanderers’ best possible points tally for the season will be 23 — the same number of points as 13th-placed Malanti Chiefs, who visit Tabankulu Celtics on the same day.

However, Malanti has better head-to-head results over Wanderers, having drawn 1-1 in the first round before beating them 2-0 at Killarney Stadium.

Article 10 on the “Head-to-head Rule” in the MTN Premier League regulations states:

“The team that has won the head-to-head encounter is placed higher than the other team.

Where the competition is played on a home-and-away basis, the head-to-head rule includes the away-goal rule.”

Wanderers head coach Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe has attributed his side’s struggles to a lack of unity following their 3-0 defeat to Celtics last Saturday — the club’s 18th loss of the season.

Hlophe did not hide his frustration, admitting internal issues were affecting results.

“The results are a reflection that there’s no unity within the team. We need to sit down and find a long-lasting solution.

However, we won’t give up, we will fight till the bitter end,” he said.

Wanderers failed to match Celtics’ intensity, often relying on hopeful long balls despite brief promise from Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko.

Defensive weaknesses saw them concede twice before the break, with a late goal sealing defeat.
