Salukazana … The Swati sound revolutionising African music and culture

In a vibrant fusion of tradition and modernity, rising star Sancheziey has dropped an album that’s more than just music — it’s a cultural movement.

Titled Salukazana, the album celebrates the rich Swati identity through sounds and stories that resonate deeply with emaSwati at home and abroad. With roots planted firmly in tradition and branches reaching into contemporary Afro Pop, Hip Hop, and Christian Rap, Salukazana offers a refreshing cultural anthem for a new generation.

The Breakthrough

The heartbeat of Salukazana is undeniably Sancheziey’s breakthrough song, Siyabonga Gogo. This track didn’t just launch his career; it crafted his musical identity. With choir harmonies, Hip Hop rhythms, Afro Pop beats, and echoes of gospel, the song serves as a powerful homage to Eswatini’s musical heritage.

Cultural Storytelling

At its core, Salukazana is an ode to love — but love rooted in Swati traditions. Unlike his previous album Umshado, which leaned on Western themes, Salukazana dives into cultural narratives like Emalobolo (bride price), Umtsimba (wedding celebrations), and Imihlambiso (gifts).

A Name Chosen by the People

The title Salukazana was chosen by fans through Facebook and TikTok polls. More than a nickname, it’s a cultural identity that connects the artist and his people.

A Global Swati Sound

Sancheziey’s vision is for the Swati sound to be instantly recognisable worldwide — whether in America, China, or Russia — preserving cultural identity through music.

Evolution of Sound

The album blends Swati proverbs, idioms, and traditional rhythms such as imfengwane (drum rhythm), tinkwela (dance beats), and kulilitela (percussive accents). Contemporary production ensures it feels both fresh and familiar.

Visual & Cultural Expression

The Siyabonga Gogo video highlights cultural spaces like the Sibaya (traditional meeting place) and sacred gravesites, guided by cultural advisors. Styled with traditional attire (Imvunulo), the video honours Swati heritage with authenticity.

Promotion & Performances

  • Upcoming TV Performance: 1KZN TV on August 19, 2025.

  • Events: South Africa (Nelspruit, September 20) plus multiple cultural gatherings in Eswatini starting August 16.

  • Social Media: TikTok, Facebook, and streaming platforms will carry the sound to the world.

Challenges & Collaborations

Self-funded, Salukazana has faced challenges, but with support from creatives like Cy Gemini and Emadlelweni Music, Sancheziey has delivered a project that is both deeply Swati and globally appealing.

A Cultural Beacon

Salukazana is more than an album — it’s a cultural beacon illuminating Swati traditions through music. By marrying heritage with modern storytelling, Sancheziey sets an example for African artists redefining culture through sound.
