Get ready to be inspired by Lindelwa Ngwenya-Vilakati, an international designer hailing from the Shiselweni region! With a BSc in Textile Apparel Design and Management, Lindelwa made waves on global stages, showcasing her work in Paris, South Africa, and Mozambique.

But this April 26, all eyes will be at Malkerns as she is ready to take your orders for the Makoti Festival, an event that celebrates the essence of married women through fashion!

At the Makoti Festival, cultural elements will play a pivotal role in the outfits. Lindelwa emphasises that while traditional sidziya fabric has long been a staple, the modern Makoti attire is now bursting with vibrant prints.

A key symbol of a married woman remains the doek (headwrap), a must-have that signifies respect in the community. Lindelwa explains, “The Makoti has to cover her head, and it’s a beautiful way to honour our roots.”

Lindelwa’s design process is a blend of research and creativity. She starts by asking, “What is a married woman?”

This exploration leads her to create a mood board that captures the atmosphere and era she wants to evoke. “When the mood is set,” she says, “the design process happens.” Each material and trim is chosen to communicate the essence of married womanhood, ensuring that every piece tells a story.

Fashion is a constantly evolving field, and Lindelwa knows how to navigate its waters. “Modern trends are good because they help a designer keep with the times,” she shares. Yet, she firmly believes that while trends may change, culture remains constant.

This balance is key in her designs, where she often fuses traditional elements with contemporary flair think exaggerated sleeves, long lengths, and even a splash of denim and cargo pockets!

When it comes to fabrics, Lindelwa’s heart beats for ankara fabric. “It comes in a variety of colours and prints that one can work with,” she explains, showcasing its versatility.

Respectable
Personal stories also fuel her creativity; “I love beautiful, respectable clothing,” she says, reflecting on her commitment to crafting attire that empowers women.

As the festival approaches, expect to see some exciting trends ! Lindelwa predicts that beading, off-shoulder designs, and innovative combinations will steal the show. “I believe these elements will elevate the traditional Makoti attire and create a captivating visual experience,” she adds with enthusiasm.

The perception of a married woman’s outfit has transformed significantly over the years. Lindelwa highlights that today’s designs may show a little skin while maintaining respectability.

“A married woman used to dress fully covered, but now it’s about being fashionable while still honouring tradition,” she explains. This evolution is also tied to women’s growing independence and empowerment in society.

Lindelwa envisions the audience at the Makoti Festival interacting with the designs on display. “If designers do their research well and produce captivating designs, the audience will definitely engage,” she says. Bringing interactive elements into her designs is something she is known for, as she believes that detail is what makes her work shine.

As we gear up for the Makoti Festival, Lindelwa has her sights set on the future of fashion. “I really hope the fashion industry grows,” she states passionately. “I wish to see fashion telling a story more than just ready-to-wear garments.” Her vision goes beyond aesthetics; she wants her designs to resonate with deep cultural narratives.

If given the chance to design a dream outfit for a famous figure, Lindelwa would choose Ntokozo Mbambo, the renowned gospel artist. “I would love to fuse traditional Makoti attire with modern street fashion for her,” she says, envisioning a stunning creation that bridges the gap between heritage and contemporary style.

Mark your calendars for April 26 and prepare to celebrate the rich tapestry of women’s fashion at the Makoti Festival! With Lindelwa at the helm, attendees can expect to come out in show stopping dresses.
