Former Mbabane Highlanders coach Meck Mwase is poised to make a sensational return to the dugout, this time with Moneni Pirates and could officially start work tomorrow.

Reliable sources within the Buccaneers’ camp revealed that the Malawian coach has agreed personal terms with the black and white hub giants following the shock resignation of Caleb Ngwenya over the weekend. Mwase, who joined Highlanders midway through last season and impressively steered them from relegation danger to a top-eight finish is said to be highly favoured by Pirates’ management.

With pre-season already underway this week, the club is eager to have him take charge immediately as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
“Mwase has already been engaged by the club’s management committee and has agreed to terms. He will be introduced to the players and technical staff on Friday where he is expected to begin work,” revealed a source close to the matter.

Moneni Pirates Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mlungisi ‘Sluga’ Ndzinisa was short of confirming Mwase’s appointment but admitted that the club was actively hunting for a high-profile coach.
“We are in the market for a coach who can elevate the team to the next level. Nothing has officially reached my office yet but talks are ongoing with several candidates. Pre-season has already started and we aim to have a new coach in place by next week,” he said.

Meanwhile, Highlanders Communications Officer Lington Gule confirmed that Mwase’s contract with the capital city giants had expired at the end of the season, making him free to negotiate with other clubs.
“The truth is that Mwase is now a free agent and can speak to any team,” he said.
Asked why Highlanders had not offered Mwase a new deal, Gule cited the club’s current leadership uncertainty following the resignation of Managing Director Bheki ‘Rubber’ Simelane.

“At the moment, we can’t engage the coach because we’re in limbo without an MD. Until there is clarity, we cannot make concrete plans for the future,” he explained. As it stands, all eyes are on Moneni Pirates, with Mwase expected to officially step into the hot seat tomorrow.
