VETERAN gospel music icon Sipho ‘Big Fish’ Makhabane is poised to release his 40th album ahead of the Easter holidays.

The seasoned artist confirmed the exciting news yesterday morning during a studio session, expressing enthusiasm about the year ahead and the projects he has lined up.

Reflecting on his musical journey, Big Fish said:
“After turning 60, this album is a testament to years of gratitude to God. It’s not my last; there’s still more music to come.”

He stated that his unwavering passion for gospel music continued to fuel his creativity, despite having spent over three decades in the industry.

Big Fish’s career began in 1993 with his debut album Thum’ Umlilo, and since then he has become a towering figure in gospel music both locally and in South Africa.

His journey to stardom was significantly boosted by the album Yekintokozo, while subsequent releases such as Vuka Mphefumulo and Makadunyiswe, recorded with CCN Records, cemented his place in gospel music history.

“I tried to retire in 2010 after Ebenezer, but my loyal supporters would not have it. They kept demanding more music, and eventually I was back in the studio,” he revealed.

He said the undying support from his fans had been a constant driving force throughout his career.

Big Fish’s contribution to gospel music has been widely recognised. His accolades include several Lifetime Achievement Awards, among them honours from the South African Music Awards (SAMA30) and a recent award from the National Gospel Music Awards (NGMA) held in November.

Other recognitions include awards from the Crown Gospel Awards, Mpumalanga Gospel Awards, and Mgoma Gospel Awards.

Beyond his musical achievements, Big Fish said he remained a committed mentor dedicated to nurturing upcoming talent.

His leadership role in the Disability Music and Arts Festival, held in September, showcased his commitment to giving back to the industry and the community.

Big Fish has also collaborated with gospel luminaries such as Jabu Ngcobo, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, and the late Vuyo Mokoena.

“Music is my calling and my gift to the people. I’m excited for what’s ahead,” he said.
