An organisation representing people living with HIV has welcomed His Majesty King Mswati III’s call for the nation to embrace pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and abstinence, saying guidance from the highest authority has restored hope and confidence among vulnerable communities.
The King made the remarks while dispersing Libutfo at Ngabezweni Royal Residence on Saturday, urging Emaswati to use PrEP as a tool to curb the spread of HIV, while also practising abstinence and responsible behaviour.
International Organisation of People Living with HIV/AIDS Country Coordinator Bonisile Mamba said the King’s leadership was encouraging, noting that messages on prevention and treatment carry greater weight when delivered by the Head of State.
“We are very happy that the King has encouraged the nation to take PrEP and practise abstinence. When such guidance comes from our authorities, people listen and take it seriously,” she said.
Mamba highlighted that women remain the most affected group by HIV in the country, with infection rates higher among females than males. She said the King’s message had given rural women the confidence to openly discuss prevention, treatment and self-care.
“We encourage both women and men to take their medication correctly and practise abstinence as the King stated. The youth must also be encouraged to go to clinics and hospitals for check-ups and to take medication when necessary,” she added.
However, Mamba expressed concern over the attitude of some health workers towards young people, saying this discourages many from visiting clinics.
“The attitude of health workers towards the youth is sometimes not good, which makes young people shy away from hospitals. As an organisation, we encourage the youth to take their medication correctly and on time, and we appreciate the support we receive from the Ministry of Health,” she said.
She further suggested that health services should be more flexible and youth-friendly, proposing alternative ways of delivering medication to those hesitant to visit clinics.
