The long-standing mystery and rumours about popular local socialite Sakhile ‘Oros’ Msibi have come to a somber conclusion.
His mother, Florence Msibi, has officially confirmed to this publication that her son has passed away in the United States.
Speaking to this publication yesterday afternoon, a grieving Msibi broke the news that the family had finally received the definitive word they had been dreading.
“Good afternoon, we have since received confirmation; he is late. The cause of death is not yet known,” she said.
The confirmation marks the end of a turbulent saga that began years ago. Sakhile, known for his vibrant personality and his famous #TeamThis hashtag, first made headlines in 2018 when he seemingly vanished.
At the time, his prolonged silence and absence from social media sparked international concern. The situation became so dire that reports were made to Interpol and human rights organisations raised alarms over his safety.

While it later emerged that he had relocated to the United States, he remained largely out of the public eye, leading to periodic waves of speculation regarding his well-being.
In recent weeks, the social media grapevine intensified. Speculation reached a fever pitch after a prominent YouTuber innomorolong_e1d posted a picture of the socialite with the caption:
“@orosbarbie was not stabbed to death… he suddenly fell sick, he got stabbed around November at the shelter he was staying at. He was going through a lot in America but didn’t tell his South African friends. But some of his close friends I spoke to in America told me he got sick that night and passed away on his way to the hospital. May his soul RIP.”
This report sent shockwaves through the social scene, though the family remained cautious.
When this publication visited the Msibi family home on Friday, the atmosphere was thick with uncertainty.
Msibi’s mother explained then that the family was in a state of limbo, unable to confirm or deny the reports.
“We also know of the social media reports. So we know as much as you do right now,” said Msibi.
She noted that they were awaiting official verification from the US Embassy before making any public statement.
With the confirmation now official, the focus now shifts to the repatriation of his remains.
While the family remains in the dark regarding the specific cause of death, the news has brought a tragic sense of closure to a story that has gripped the public for over years.
Sakhile ‘Oros’ Msibi will be remembered as a pioneer in the local socialite scene, whose life and eventual disappearance kept the nation talking.
