LAVUMISA – Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla has urged men in polygamous marriages to treat their wives equally to avoid family disputes.

Dladla made the appeal on Wednesday during the official handover of houses to five beneficiaries, including Tsiteni Thumbela from Ndunayithini, who is in a polygamous marriage.

Thumbela shared that constant quarrels in her marriage forced her to relocate. She alleged that her sister wife’s children would often disrespect her, making it difficult to live peacefully.

“I had one child with my late husband and I have been staying in a tent with grandchildren after my stick-and-mud house collapsed years ago,” said Thumbela.

She explained that the tent was in a deplorable state, with rain often pouring in. Some community members, she added, would mock her shelter. Despite these challenges, Thumbela expressed joy at receiving the keys to her new home.

DPM’s Message on Polygamy

Dladla encouraged the beneficiaries to thank God daily for their blessings. She also advised children not to interfere in adult matters, particularly in cases of polygamy, and stressed that no child should be discriminated against or miss school because of their parents’ marital arrangements.

“Polygamy today is different. If you cannot manage it, do not do it,” said Dladla.

She further assured Thumbela that no one would attempt to evict her from her new home, reaffirming government’s commitment to supporting families.

A New Beginning

Thumbela said the house handover marked a turning point in her life.

“As I settle into my new home, I can finally look forward to a brighter future, free from the challenges of living in a tent. The DPM’s words of wisdom will serve as a reminder of the importance of family values and respect,” she said.

Community member Themba Zubuko, who attended the ceremony, praised the DPM’s remarks as timely.

“The DPM’s call for polygamous men to treat their wives equally is a reminder of the need for love, respect, and understanding in all family arrangements. As the nation moves forward, it is essential to prioritise the well-being and dignity of all Emaswati, particularly those in vulnerable situations,” he said.
