The country’s swimming sensation Hayley Hoy’s earnings this year have reached E70 000.
As reported in Parliament during the first quarter activity report of the ministry of sports, culture and youth affairs, government has already paid Hoy E65 000 for podium finishes in the Africa Aquatics Zone VI Swimming Championships, hosted by Namibia. Hoy has also guaranteed herself E5 000 in the ongoing Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games in Namibia, taking her total podium earnings to E70 000.
Government, through the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council, pays athletes E20 000 for a gold medal in an international competition, E10 000 for a silver, and E5 000 for a bronze medal.
“A total of E190 000 was disbursed to various athletes for their podium performances at respective recognised regional championships attended in the previous quarter. The Senior Men’s National Netball Team received E10 000 for their silver medal performance during the Africa Netball Regional Championships in Namibia,” states the ministry’s report.

Also receiving cash incentives were athletes who competed at the CAA Regional Relay Championships in Botswana.
In his preamble, Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima said the ministry’s core objectives are to foster sustainable youth development, preserve the country’s cultural heritage, and promote the creative industries and sporting excellence in Eswatini.
Nzima stated that this requires coordinated and effective efforts across all sectors of government, along with the ministry’s technical departments and parastatals, to ensure a successful, integrated approach to national development.
In the current financial year, the ministry was allocated a budget of E122 705 615 for both recurrent and capital expenditure. A total of E86 845 615 was allocated for recurrent expenditure, against a budget allocation of E35 586 000 for capital programmes.
