Police have made a breakthrough in a disturbing string of rape cases involving schoolchildren in Manzini.

A suspected serial rapist, who had been located by police, was fatally shot after he allegedly attempted to flee from law enforcers yesterday.

The suspect was wanted for allegedly preying on at least seven minors, some of whom were attacked while travelling to and from school.

The survivors, aged between eight and 14, were reportedly attacked this month, with four incidents occurring in the past week alone, sparking fear and outrage within the community.

On Tuesday morning, a 10-year-old girl of Masekweni was raped, while another minor was violated in the afternoon on the same day, allegedly by the same suspect.

Another minor was reportedly attacked on Monday and another yesterday.

In response to the surge in attacks, police in Manzini began escorting children to and from school in affected areas.

However, the suspect allegedly struck again at Sterksroom near Madonsa shortly after officers had left the vicinity, indicating a brazen disregard for increased security measures.

Police later conducted an operation at Madonsa Cemetery, where most of the reported incidents had occurred.

According to Manzini Crime Branch Officer (RCBO) Derrick Makhanya, the operation was aimed at apprehending the suspect.

During the operation, officers discovered a shack believed to have been occupied by the suspect.

The structure, which was later demolished, was hidden deep within thick vegetation, making access difficult.

Inside, police recovered knives and other items matching descriptions previously provided by survivors, further linking the suspect to the crimes.

The breakthrough was attributed to community cooperation, with members of the public reportedly informing police of the suspect’s movements after another attack in Sterksroom.

Officers quickly cordoned off the area, leading to a foot chase when the suspect allegedly attempted to evade arrest.

During the pursuit, the suspect was shot by police and rushed to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.

Acting Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Nosipho Mnguni confirmed both the incidents and the suspect’s death.

She said the identity of the deceased had not yet been established.

The case has intensified national concern over the safety of children, particularly in school routes and vulnerable community spaces, highlighting the need for sustained protective measures and community vigilance.
