She shared that she trained rigorously for the event, running 10km every morning and afternoon in preparation for the recruitment.

She described herself as a long-distance runner with experience in endurance events, including last year’s Imbube Marathon, where she completed the 21km race.

Her mother, Winile Magagula, expressed excitement with her daughter’s achievement.

She shared that the family, which includes four children, has faced financial challenges, with her husband being the sole breadwinner and not permanently employed. “We are proud of Sanelisiwe for using her talent to build a better future,” Magagula said.

Potential
She recalled that Sanelisiwe initially played football before a teacher recognised her potential as a runner and encouraged her to pursue athletics. Since then, she has consistently excelled in competitions.

Magagula added that the family had placed their trust in God and remained hopeful that Sanelisiwe would continue to thrive in the recruitment process and beyond.

…She went straight to school to write exams

Straight from securing a spot in the list of aspiring soldiers under Kukhanyeni Inkhundla yesterday, Sanelisiwe Nomvula Mphaphu went straight to school to write an external examination paper, which was scheduled for the afternoon.

“I aspire to be an educated soldier,” she said, whilst sharing her aspirations shortly before sitting for her final English Paper 1 exam at 1pm.

Sanelisiwe was warmly welcomed by her Headteacher Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini, and fellow pupils, who celebrated her achievement with cheers and ululation. She emphasised her commitment to education, stating that she intended to continue her studies to position herself for future promotions within the army.

“Education is the key to success,” she said, expressing her desire to rise through the ranks as a qualified and knowledgeable soldier.

On that note, the headteacher praised Sanelisiwe’s performance, describing her as one of the school’s top achievers.

He said the school was proud of her accomplishment and had full confidence in her potential, which is why they granted her permission to participate in the recruitment exercise.

He also extended gratitude to Their Majesties for creating opportunities that allow young people to contribute meaningfully to national service.

Dlamini encouraged parents of successful candidates across the country to support their children in continuing their education, even as they advance through the recruitment process.

In addition, he congratulated another Form V pupil, Zodwa Mkhatshwa, who triumphed in the female category during the recruitment exercise at Mtfongwaneni Inkhundla last Tuesday.

Dlamini expressed hope that both learners would successfully complete the next stages, including vetting and medical assessments, noting that their talents had already shone through during school sports competitions.

As a token of appreciation, Dlamini gifted Sanelisiwe E200.
