Mbabane – The Government of Eswatini is working to ensure the safe and orderly repatriation of five foreign inmates who were transferred from the United States of America to Eswatini last month.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the detainees — from Jamaica, Laos, Cuba, Yemen, and Vietnam — are currently held under strict security measures in highly secure facilities, eliminating any risk of escape.

Rehabilitation and Reintegration Support

The ministry said His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) is implementing internationally recognised rehabilitation programmes to prepare the inmates for reintegration. In partnership with global organisations specialising in migrant protection, Eswatini will provide logistical support and tailored reintegration assistance to help ensure a smooth and sustainable transition when they return to their home countries.

Foreign Policy and Humanitarian Commitment

The ministry emphasised that the repatriation is guided by Eswatini’s foreign policy principle of “Having No Enemy” (anginasitsa), reflecting the country’s commitment to peace, goodwill, and international cooperation.

This approach, it said, has cemented Eswatini’s role as a sanctuary for displaced persons and a mediator in regional and international affairs. The government is balancing humanitarian obligations with security considerations due to the inmates’ criminal backgrounds.

Convictions and Security Measures

Government clarified that the inmates were convicted of standard criminal offences similar to those handled within Eswatini’s own correctional system. Stringent security protocols remain in place to safeguard communities while honouring humanitarian responsibilities.

International Cooperation

Active discussions with the inmates’ countries of origin are ongoing, with the ministry reporting encouraging progress. Eswatini also acknowledged the partnership with South Africa in managing the process, pledging continued open communication and cooperation.
