SWIMMING – Top swimming prospect Luca Fraser has been cleared to travel to Namibia for the AUSC Region 5 Games after the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) intervened to reverse his suspension by the Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA).

The young swimmer had been embroiled in a dispute with ESA over alleged misconduct during a recent competition in Egypt. This disagreement led ESA to suspend Luca ahead of the regional games. However, the EOCGA stepped in to mediate and ensure the country’s top swimmer remains part of the national team.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, EOCGA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maxwell Jele confirmed the organisation’s intervention, citing concerns over escalating tensions between the swimmer and the association.

“Officially, mediation will take place once the competition is over. We hope lasting solutions can be found.
This is an issue that affects not just the swimmer and the association but the entire nation. Luca has proven his determination and has represented Eswatini admirably, bringing home medals that have put the country on the map.
We feel it is vital to protect our athletes’ welfare and, in turn, the nation’s sporting future,” he said.

Jele also highlighted the EOCGA’s recently launched National High Performance Strategy, aimed at preparing athletes to win medals at future Olympic Games. He stressed the importance of athlete wellness and safeguarding in pursuit of this goal.

Family Reaction & Request for Clarity
Meanwhile, Luca’s guardian and mother, Lynette Russo, expressed mixed feelings following the latest developments. She noted that despite reports of his inclusion, the family had yet to receive official confirmation from ESA.

“The disciplinary case never took place, and ESA has not communicated any reasons why. We have not received official clearance except what has been said publicly,” she said.

Nonetheless, she praised the EOCGA — particularly Jele — for their unwavering support and active role in seeking resolution.

“Jele has shown commendable leadership, ensuring Luca’s wellbeing remains a priority. He has pushed for mediation to follow after the games, and despite being under pressure, Luca has continued training as best he can,” she said.

Russo also confirmed she has requested a formal undertaking from EOCGA regarding Luca’s safety and welfare during the games, where he will be under the management of ESA Secretary General Nozipho Mahlalela, who is travelling as the swimming team manager.

The mediation process between ESA and the swimmer is expected to take place upon the team’s return from Namibia, with hopes of restoring unity and focus ahead of upcoming international competitions.
