Football legend Doctor Khumalo headlined the Men’s Symposium in Ezulwini, delivering an inspiring message on discipline, mental strength, and purpose to a packed audience.
Khumalo captivated the attendees by drawing powerful parallels between football and life. He emphasised that while technique is essential in football, the mental aspect is even more critical.
“If you’re not sound mentally, you will not give us a good game,” he said—extending the principle beyond the pitch into everyday life.
A Journey of Discipline and Sacrifice
Recounting his personal journey, Khumalo reflected on the challenges he faced, including signing a contract with Kaizer Chiefs in 2017. He credited his mother as a guiding force during that time, encouraging him to prioritise his values and long-term goals.
He also shared anecdotes from his early football days, stories that highlighted the discipline, sacrifice, and hard work required to succeed. One memorable story involved how his parents controlled his salary in the beginning, which taught him financial responsibility from a young age.
“Discipline comes with pain,” he told the audience, stressing that success demands more than talent, it requires consistency and commitment.
Khumalo’s message was one of triumph over adversity, illustrating how he overcame obstacles through grit and perseverance. He concluded by emphasising self-discipline and responsible decision-making, encouraging the men in the audience to adopt these values in their own lives.
Powerful Stories and Lasting Impact
The audience walked away with key lessons, particularly the importance of mental toughness, discipline, and self-leadership. The impact was palpable, with many attendees visibly moved and energised by his story.
The symposium was also filled with other inspirational figures. The auditorium was packed with men, most proudly dressed in their favourite football jerseys in line with the event’s theme. Khumalo wore his iconic number 15 jersey, adding a personal and nostalgic touch to his appearance.
Business Eswatini CEO Shares Resilience Story
Business Eswatini CEO E. Nathi Dlamini shared a deeply personal story of resilience. He spoke about losing his father at the age of 12 and the financial hardships that followed.
Dlamini recalled working two jobs to support himself and even sleeping under a bridge at one point. His breakthrough came during his second year when he landed a job at First Republic Bank, a turning point that marked the start of his journey toward stability and success.
“Knowing who you are will lead to your identity,” he said, highlighting the importance of self-discovery.
Business and Mental Health Insights
The event also featured insights from businessman Bruce Richards and entrepreneur Sifiso Dlamini, who addressed personal growth and business-related topics. Sifiso posed a powerful question to the audience:
“Who are you?”
This encouraged deep self-reflection, challenging attendees to examine their identity, values, and purpose.
Mental Health Takes Centre Stage
The symposium concluded with a much-needed focus on mental health, led by psychologist Mfundo Simelane and psychiatrist Dr Gagu Matsebula. Their interactive Q&A session allowed attendees to ask candid questions and gain a deeper understanding of mental health challenges affecting men today.
By addressing these topics openly, both professionals helped normalise the conversation around mental well-being, reinforcing the message that mental health is just as important as physical and professional success.
A Personal Touch
Sisusa Dlamini, organiser of the Men’s Symposium under Semusa Networks, expressed heartfelt appreciation to all the speakers for their valuable contributions. The overwhelming attendance highlighted the importance and relevance of the topics discussed.
Dlamini acknowledged the need for a larger venue to accommodate future audiences and ensure meaningful engagement.
She also shared a personal anecdote about Doctor Khumalo, mentioning that her fiancé is a Khumalo as well. Dlamini expressed admiration for Khumalo’s kindness and humility, which she witnessed through his interactions on Instagram and a documentary.
