A cold front is expected to pass through the country this Sunday at around 2pm.

According to Eswatini Meteorology Department Meteorologist Buhle Simelane, the persistent rains currently experienced in the country are expected to stop on Saturday.

He said this Sunday there would be less rainfall, particularly around Siteki and Lomahasha, with weather conditions expected to be partly cloudy and fair.

“Another system will be experienced in the country, referred to as a cold front. Our Sunday weather will be influenced by the active systems that caused the recent rains. A cold front will pass over the country around 2pm and 3pm.

It will change the weather conditions, bringing in rains from the south, particularly around Lavumisa, as well as moisture from the ocean,” Simelane added.

He said areas that would be most affected by the cold front were those in the southern and eastern parts of the country, where torrential rains accompanied by thunderstorms were also expected.

Simelane explained that the cold front would help move the existing weather systems, noting that the rains experienced over the past week were caused by two systems.

He said there was a cut-off low situated in the north of the country, between Limpopo and Mozambique, which lasted for seven days.

He said there was also tropical air moving towards the country from the equator.

He added that the tropical air interacted with the cut-off low, resulting in torrential rains.

Simelane said most of the rainfall came from the north-east, particularly Lomahasha and Mhlume, moving towards Matsamo and Buhleni.

He said the areas that received the highest rainfall during the seven days were in the northern parts of the country.

“The cold front will then create space for southeasterly winds, which will not bring torrential rains but drizzle, beginning on Monday.

On Tuesday, we will have cloudy conditions with drizzle in some areas, as well as low temperatures,” he said.

He added that next Wednesday, conditions would be fair in most places, with light rain expected after lunch in some areas.

On Thursday, Simelane said light rain is also expected but highlighted that there will be drizzle next week.

“The rains that tormented us throughout the week were caused by the cut-off low and tropical air, which will move on this Saturday,” he said.
