SOCCER – Tension was on full display at Mavuso Sports Centre on Friday evening as Moneni Pirates supporters turned their backs on the team following a disappointing 0-1 defeat to Tabankulu Celtics.

It was a rare and emotional scene. Typically, regardless of the result Moneni players always approach the stands after the final whistle to thank their supporters, sharing a moment of unity through song. This time, however, frustration had clearly reached boiling point.

As the players moved toward the stands in their usual post-match ritual, sections of the Moneni faithful rejected the gesture, turning away in visible disappointment, a stark reflection of growing concern over the team’s recent form.

The defeat marked Moneni Pirates’ second consecutive 0-1 loss following an earlier setback against Rangers. These back-to-back defeats have raised questions about the club’s direction at a crucial stage of the season.

Their next fixture, once again at Mavuso Sports Centre will be against Ubombo Sugar where pressure will be mounting for a positive response.

Supporters did not hide their frustration after the match. One fan, who preferred to remain anonymous, said the warning signs had been evident for some time and pointed to team selection as a major concern.

“The team is not doing well and everyone can see it now. There are decisions being made that are costing us and losing at home is unacceptable, especially after also losing to the same side in the second round,” he said.

Another supporter shared similar sentiments, acknowledging what he described as poor refereeing but insisting that tactical decisions were also hurting the team.

He questioned why some influential players were left on the bench and only introduced late in matches.

Moneni Pirates Public Relations Officer Mluleki ‘Sluga’ Simelane admitted that the poor run of results had been frustrating for everyone associated with the club. However, he urged supporters to remain patient and continue believing in the team.

“Not getting results is painful for all of us but this is just a difficult phase. We believe the team will recover and return to winning ways. Let us stay calm and trust the process,” he said.

For Moneni Pirates, the upcoming match now carries added significance, not only for points but also for restoring faith among their supporters.
