SOCCER – Manzini Wanderers’ relegation fears deepened after a wasteful display saw them fall 2-1 to Manzini Sea Birds at Ka-Langa Technical Centre yesterday, in a match they largely dominated, but ultimately failed to convert their superiority into points.
The defeat leaves Wanderers staring at an increasingly bleak survival equation, with only 21 points left to play for and their hopes now realistically hinging on a relegation/promotion playoff spot, dependent on favourable results elsewhere.
Played under the scorching sun, the match started at a high tempo, with both sides showing attacking intent. Wanderers carved out the first meaningful opportunity in the 20th minute when Sphamandla Dlamini broke through on goal, but his effort lacked composure and failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Sea Birds responded moments later through in-form Philani Mkhonto, who squandered a clear chance from close range, firing wide when well positioned. The visitors continued to threaten but were repeatedly caught offside as they attempted to exploit space behind the Wanderers defence.
The hosts should have taken the lead five minutes before the break. Dlamini’s pace and skill on the right flank set up Muhle Siyaya, but the full-back could not keep his effort on target.

That miss proved costly. In the 41st minute, Mkhonto found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Fisokuhle Shongwe and unselfishly squared the ball to Khaya Dlamini, who tapped into an empty net.
Wanderers responded almost immediately, with experienced attacking midfielder Lwazi ‘Shumi’ Mamba restoring parity in the 43rd minute with a composed finish, his first goal since joining the club in January.
The second half followed a familiar pattern, with Wanderers dominating, but lacking precision in the final third. Lwazi struck the upright in the 52nd minute as the hosts squandered several clear-cut chances in a five-minute spell.
Sea Birds turned to their bench for fresh impetus, introducing Joseph Kibonge, Mpendulo Tfomo and Muzi Tsabedze, a move that injected renewed energy into their attack.
Despite continued pressure from Wanderers, including efforts from Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko and Sizolwethu Mdvoti, the decisive moment came 10 minutes from time. Kibonge rose highest inside the six-yard box to head home the winner.
There was late controversy as Sea Birds appealed for a penalty that was waved away, drawing angry reactions from their supporters. Kibonge’s celebration also sparked brief tension on the pitch as he pushed left back Mpendulo Maseko with his chest.
Sea Birds held firm to secure victory, while Wanderers were left to rue missed chances in a result that could prove costly in their fight against relegation.
