FOLLOWING the tragic death of a University of Eswatini (UNESWA) student, who was reported to have taken his own life, the university has initiated an internal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
At a press conference held at the Kwaluseni Campus yesterday, UNESWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala confirmed that a committee of four members from the university’s Mental Health and Counselling departments would be leading the investigation. The committee, which includes representation from all campuses, will also involve the Dean of Student Affairs (DSA) in its inquiry.
The investigation follows the untimely death of Farido Singwa, a level two Bachelor of Humanities student, whose body was discovered by his sister at the Mbuluzana River on Sunday morning. Reports suggest that Singwa had previously alluded to taking his life, sharing his feelings with both his girlfriend and family members.
A relative claimed that Singwa had attempted to change courses, however, he was told that it was too late. He was reportedly informed that he would lose his scholarship if he switched courses, which left him frustrated and helpless.
Singwa had visited the registration department the previous week, where he was allegedly treated dismissively by a male employee.
It is said that the employee told him that if he wished to change courses, he would have to wait another two years, a conversation that is believed to have deeply affected the student.
Following Singwa’s tragic death, students from the Kwaluseni Campus, later joined by those from the Luyengo Campus, took to the streets in protest. The students raised their voices to demand not only better support for mental health but also accountability for the university employee they believed contributed to Singwa’s distress.
Addressing the press, Professor Thwala said, “the UNESWA Senate has instituted internal investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and is calling for calm within the student body. The university is committed to identifying the factors that may have contributed to this and ensuring that steps are taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.”
Professor Thwala also revealed that, due to the urgency of the matter, the committee has been given two weeks to complete its investigation and present its findings.
He acknowledged the growing need for strengthened mental health support services at UNESWA. He stated that while the university already offers guidance and counselling services to address students’ challenges, more must be done to ensure these services are both accessible and effective. The university is exploring ways to enhance its mental healthcare provision and create a more supportive environment for students and staff alike.
Meanwhile, Professor Thwala expressed deep concern about the increasing number of suicide cases among students, highlighting that the issue of mental health is a global concern. “Mental health challenges are a serious issue worldwide, and UNESWA is no exception,” he said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to Singwa’s family, friends, and loved ones. “Farido’s passing is a profound loss to our university community, and we grieve alongside his family during this incredibly difficult time,” the vice-chancellor added.
The university has called upon all stakeholders, including families, communities, and government agencies, to collaborate in addressing mental health challenges. Professor Thwala urged that, together, society could create an environment where individuals feel supported and empowered to seek help when facing difficulties.
Once again, he conveyed his deepest sympathies to those affected by Singwa’s death, reaffirming that UNESWA remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting its students and tackling the mental health issues they face.
Student Representative Council (SRC) Secretary General Mncobi Mamba said as students, they appreciated that they were addressed immediately and hoped that there would be transparency in the unfolding of the process. he said they would also appreciate solutions.
