Every year during Women’s Month, we take the opportunity to celebrate the resilience, strength and accomplishments of women across Eswatini.
But in honouring this strength, we must also shine a light on issues that are often hidden in silence, such as pelvic health.
For far too long, women have been told that leaking urine after childbirth, experiencing pain during intercourse or living with a constant pressure ‘down there’ is simply part of life.
It is not. These symptoms are not normal and more importantly, they are treatable.

At the heart of this issue is the pelvic floor—a group of muscles that support the bladder, uterus and bowels.
When functioning well, these muscles help with everything from continence to sexual health.
But when weakened, stretched or injured (often due to childbirth, menopause or surgery), they can cause a range of life-altering symptoms.
These may include:
-
Urinary incontinence (leaking urine when laughing, sneezing or exercising)
-
Pelvic organ prolapse (a heavy or bulging feeling in the pelvis)
-
Lower back or pelvic pain
-
Painful intercourse
-
Bowel difficulties
While these challenges are common, they should not be accepted as normal.
That’s where physiotherapy, specifically pelvic health physiotherapy, comes in.
WHAT IS PELVIC HEALTH PHYSIOTHERAPY?
This specialised area of physiotherapy is focused on assessing and treating the muscles, nerves and connective tissues of the pelvic region.
A pelvic health physiotherapist uses a range of evidence-based treatments to help women regain control over their bodies.
Treatment may include:
-
Individualised pelvic floor exercises (not just “Kegels”)
-
Manual therapy to relieve pain or tightness
-
Breathing and core integration techniques
-
Education on posture, bladder habits and lifestyle factors
-
Realistic, empowering recovery plans
And the best part? It’s private, compassionate and highly effective.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER IN ESWATINI?
In Eswatini, cultural stigma often prevents women from speaking openly about these issues.
Many suffer in silence, fearing embarrassment or being misunderstood.
But silence only strengthens the problem.
By bringing pelvic health into the public conversation this Women’s Month, we are saying to every woman: Your pain is valid. Your health matters. And you deserve to feel strong and whole.
Ekuphileni Clinic is proud to join this year’s Women’s Month under the banner ‘Pelvic Health Empowerment: Taking Back Control.’
We encourage women of all ages, whether you’re a young mother, a professional woman or navigating menopause, to take charge of your health.
If you are experiencing symptoms or simply want to understand your body better, book a pelvic health assessment.
Knowledge is power and your healing journey can begin with a single step.
Let this Women’s Month be more than a celebration; let it be a turning point.
Because strong women deserve strong, supported bodies.
