“ Lay not for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” – Matthew 6: 19-21
It is a fact that one of the reasons why most people living in the city have not gone to their homestead for a very long time is because they don’t have a house to lodge in their homestead.
Experience has shown that no matter how many years a stranger strays in a foreign land, he will surely go home one day.Dear fellow pilgrims, do you still remember that heaven is our home and we are strangers on earth?
Knowing therefore that we are all strangers on earth, we must lay up treasures not only on earth but also in heaven.Laying up our treasures in heaven is a biblical concept that refers to storing up spiritual riches and rewards in heaven rather than accumulating earthly wealth. Jesus teaches in Mathew 6: 19-20 that true treasures are those that are eternal and heavenly, not earthly or temporary.
This concept involves prioritising spiritual growth, living a life of service, generosity and obedience to God’s will. It is about investing in things that have eternal values. By focusing on these eternal treasures, believers can experience a sense of purpose, joy and fulfilment, knowing that their efforts will have lasting impact in heaven.
HOW DO WE LAY UP OUR TREASURES IN HEAVEN?
According to biblical teachings, laying up treasures in heaven involves:
1) Giving to those in need (Mathew 6:1-4): Helping the poor, widows, orphans and others in need.
2) Supporting missions and ministries: contributing to spreading the gospel and advancing God’s kingdom.
3) Living generously: sharing resources, time and talents with others.
4) Storing up spiritual riches: pursuing spiritual growth, wisdom, and character.
5) Serving others selflessly: Demonstrating love, kindness and compassion.
By prioritising these actions, believers can accumulate eternal treasures that bring joy and rewards in heaven.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LAYING UP OUR TREASURES IN HEAVEN?
The benefits of laying up treasures in heaven include:
1) Eternal rewards: Treasures stored in heaven will last forever, unlike earthly wealth that is temporary.
2) Spiritual growth: Focusing on eternal treasures promotes spiritual maturity and a deeper relationship with God.
3) Joy and fulfilment: Living generously and serving others brings joy and a sense of purpose.
4) Heavenly perspective: Prioritizing eternal treasures helps believers maintain a heavenly perspective, rather than being consumed by earthly concerns.
5) Freedom from earthly attachment: Laying up treasures in heaven helps believers detach from worldly wealth and possessions.
6) God’s approval: Living in accordance with God’s will and priorities brings divine approval and blessings.
These benefits highlight the value of prioritizing eternal treasures over temporary earthly gains.
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT LAYING UP OUR TREASURES IN HEAVEN?
The consequences of not laying up our treasures in heaven include:
1) Loss of eternal rewards: Failing to prioritise eternal treasures may result in missed opportunities for heavenly rewards.
2) Earthly focus: Being consumed by earthly wealth and possessions can lead to lack of spiritual growth and a narrow perspective.
3) Spiritual emptiness: pursuing only earthly wealth can leave one feeling unfulfilled and empty.
4) Vulnerability to loss: Earthly wealth can be lost due to circumstances beyond ones control.
5) God’s warning: Jesus warned about the danger of storing up earthly treasures, emphasising the importance of prioritising eternal riches.
These consequences highlight the importance of prioritising eternal treasures and living with an eternal perspective.
