The Ministry of Home Affairs has confirmed that this year’s Independence Day holiday, which falls on September 6, will be observed this Saturday.

The ministry’s Communications Officer, Mlandvo Dlamini, yesterday clarified that the holiday would not be shifted to another day, but would be observed on the same day since Saturday is a normal working day.

Normally, when a holiday falls on a weekend, specifically a Sunday, it gets shifted to another weekday so that the nation may have a free day.

While confirming the Independence Day holiday, Dlamini also reminded the nation that the Umhlanga holiday would be celebrated on Monday, September 8.

Meanwhile, Eswatini gained its independence on September 6, 1968, which coincidentally is the same year that His Majesty King Mswati III was born.

The nation has celebrated Independence Day for 56 years since gaining freedom from British rule. Notably, during the 50th anniversary of independence and the king’s birthday in April 2018, the country marked a significant milestone by officially changing its name from Swaziland to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Eswatini has maintained peace since independence, avoiding civil wars, and has been recognised globally for its peaceful nature. The kingdom has been building bilateral relations with countries worldwide, with His Majesty emphasising that Eswatini has no enemies.
