The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally sought information regarding the violence that broke out at Mavuso Sports Centre, with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) confirming receipt of official correspondence.
The enquiry follows dramatic scenes at Mavuso moments after Nsingizini Hotspurs scored a late added-time goal to take the lead.
Supporters of Mbabane Highlanders stormed the pitch in protest and reportedly assaulted referee Celumusa Siphepho, forcing match officials to flee for safety.
Police intervened to restore order, firing warning shots into the air as tensions escalated. While dispersing the crowd, one supporter was struck by a rubber bullet as officers worked to contain the unrest and prevent further injuries.
EFA Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe confirmed that CAF had written to the association seeking clarity on the disturbances, which have since drawn regional attention. However, he did not disclose the contents of the letter.
“I can confirm that we have received correspondence from CAF. The matter is being handled by all relevant stakeholders,” Radebe said, adding that the EFA was working closely with concerned parties to ensure due process was followed.

A source at the EFA said such matters were treated with the seriousness they deserved, particularly when continental governing bodies were involved.
The source noted that CAF’s enquiry demonstrated how domestic incidents could have wider implications for the country’s football reputation.
“CAF’s enquiry signals the seriousness with which such incidents are viewed at continental level, placing additional pressure on the relevant committees to address the situation decisively and safeguard the integrity of the game,” the source said.
The violence at Mavuso had already prompted strong local reactions, with football authorities condemning the behaviour witnessed at the venue.
The incident has raised concerns about crowd control, safety measures and the broader image of local football on the continental stage.
