Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, says the impressive attendance at this year’s Butimba Ceremony is a testament to the love and appreciation Emaswati have for their culture.

He said as a Liswati, he was proud of his culture and lauded Libutfo from across the country for attending the ceremony in their numbers.

Ndwandwe noted that the nation has several significant ceremonies and, while Butimba is not held annually, it remains important. He said he was just as excited as the Libutfo about participating in the ceremony.

🌱 Purpose of Butimba

Explaining the significance of the ceremony, Chief Ndwandwe said Butimba is for the controlled burning of vegetation (kushisa tikhotse).

  • The process removes old vegetation to make room for new growth.

  • It enriches soil nutrients, creating favourable conditions for prairie species.

  • It reduces the spread of invasive and pest species.

  • It helps prevent dangerous wildfires by consuming excess fuel such as dead and fallen trees.

The minister clarified that the ceremony is not intended to destroy wildlife or the environment, but to rejuvenate ecosystems and sustain biodiversity.

🐾 Wildlife & Tradition

Chief Ndwandwe highlighted that in the past, wildlife encountered by Libutfo during Butimba was chased and hunted with dogs and spears — a practice that prevented excessive killing and preserved the environment.

He explained that the ceremony also served to cull wildlife when necessary, ensuring that animal populations remained balanced with their ecosystems and habitats.

🕯️ Preserving Culture

The minister emphasised that ceremonies like Butimba are vital for:

  • Transferring Eswatini culture and customs to future generations.

  • Reminding the current generation of their roots and identity.

Chief Ndwandwe concluded that Butimba is a source of national pride and a reminder of the deep connection between culture, people, and the environment.
