THE spiritual home of Eswatini football is set to roar back to life this Sunday as the ‘Mecca’, Somhlolo National Stadium, hosts a mouth-watering MTN Premier League Week 20 clash between Mbabane Swallows and Nsingizini Hotspurs.

In a move that has electrified the local football scene, the Beautiful Birds were officially granted permission to host this high-stakes encounter at the iconic venue following a successful formal approach to the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.

While whispers of the application had circulated for days, confirmation marks a significant moment for the domestic game, bringing top-flight league action back to the nation’s most storied pitch.

For months, Somhlolo has largely been reserved for the prestige of the Ingwenyama Cup final, high-profile CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League fixtures, and international assignments involving Eswatini national football team.

The last MTN Premier League fixture at the stadium ended in high drama when Denver Sundowns defeated Manzini Wanderers 4-2 on the final day — a result that confirmed Wanderers’ relegation.

By returning to Somhlolo, the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) is signalling that this Week 20 encounter is no ordinary fixture — it is a marquee event deserving of the grandest stage in the kingdom.

The fixture is expected to draw a capacity crowd, with both sides enjoying strong momentum and vocal support this season.

Mbabane Swallows have been bullish in the build-up, making it clear they have no intention of surrendering points to the current log leaders.

Swallows Public Relations Officer Knowledge ‘Bhambo’ Ngwenya struck a defiant tone on national radio.

“The worst result we could get against Nsingizini would be a draw. Nsingizini should forget about defeating us; Swallows will continue grinding out results despite facing strong opposition,” he said.

Nsingizini Hotspurs, however, remain unmoved by the occasion or the rhetoric from the capital.

Their PRO, Mnotfo Nkosi, welcomed the shift to the national stadium, saying the decision was motivated by both safety considerations and the anticipated crowd size.

“It will not be an easy game for Swallows. We are ready for a tough encounter and promise that we are yet to fill up stadiums, assuring the Premier League of Eswatini and the sponsor of our commitment to attracting the numbers,” he said.

When the two sides last met in January, Swallows claimed a narrow victory courtesy of a clinical strike from attacking forward Sizolwethu ‘Nunu’ Shabalala.

That result remains a sore point for Nsingizini and sets the stage for what promises to be a fiery tactical contest.

For the Birds, it is an opportunity to prove they remain masters of the big occasion. For the log-leading Hotspurs, it is a chance to stamp authority at the very heart of Eswatini football.

From a logistical standpoint, the return to Somhlolo comes at a premium.

Swallows will pay the government-mandated E10 000 stadium usage fee, while the venue will receive 10% of gross gate takings. The PLE will collect its 20% share in accordance with league policy.

Fans will pay E40 at the gate to witness the spectacle.
