MINISTER of Natural Resources and Energy Prince Lonkhokhela, has called for the establishment of a legal framework that grants farm dwellers rights to the land they occupy, saying such a law would prevent conflicts similar to the Mbondzela farm saga.
Prince Lonkhokhela emphasised that the Mbondzela incident served as a clear reminder of the challenges faced by farm dwellers who lack formal recognition and protection. He stated that introducing land rights for people who have lived on farms for generations would foster stability, reduce disputes and promote peaceful coexistence between landowners and occupants.
According to the Prince, many farm dwellers live in uncertainty because they have no documented rights to the land they call home, making them vulnerable to eviction and displacement.
“We need a law that ensures people who have lived on farmland for many years are recognised and protected. This will reduce tensions and help avoid situations like the Mbondzela farm saga,” he said.

The minister explained that such legislation would not only safeguard the welfare of farm residents but also create a structured system that guides how landowners and dwellers can coexist. He noted that current legal provisions do not adequately address the realities on the ground, leaving room for misunderstandings and prolonged disputes.

He added that granting land rights would improve social harmony and support government efforts towards sustainable rural development. “When people feel secure, they are more likely to invest in their homes, participate in community development, and contribute positively to the economy,” he said.
The Prince further highlighted that the Mbondzela incident demonstrated the emotional, social and economic strain caused when communities are uncertain about their future on the land. He commended the peaceful negotiations that eventually resolved the dispute but insisted that preventive measures must now be prioritised.
Prince Lonkhokhela concluded by urging lawmakers, traditional authorities and affected communities to participate actively in shaping the proposed legislation. He stated that the government must move swiftly to implement measures that promote peace, dignity and security for all farm dwellers across Eswatini.
