The successful hosting of the inaugural Africa–European Union Parliamentary Assembly and the OACPS Africa Region Parliamentary Group Meeting has underscored the country’s growing reputation as an emerging hub for international diplomacy and parliamentary cooperation.

The high-level gathering, which convened lawmakers, diplomats, policymakers, youth leaders, women representatives and business stakeholders from across Africa and Europe, has been widely viewed as a strong affirmation of the country’s increasing credibility on the global stage as a trusted venue for dialogue on governance, development, and international cooperation.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Clerk to Parliament Benedict Xaba noted that the assembly demonstrated the country’s capacity to host complex multilateral engagements while fostering meaningful dialogue on pressing global challenges.

He noted that the week-long programme was officially launched following the arrival of Moussa Saleh Batraki, who was received in the country ahead of the opening sessions. Noting that delegates were later hosted at a royal dinner by His Majesty King Mswati III, an event that highlighted the kingdom’s longstanding tradition of hospitality and its strategic commitment to strengthening international relations.

Xaba said the assembly was officially opened under the representation of His Majesty, with Prince Lindani delivering a message that emphasised unity between Africa and Europe. Noting that the address called for deeper collaboration in addressing shared challenges such as economic transformation, trade expansion, youth unemployment, and sustainable development partnerships.

He further said throughout the proceedings, delegates engaged in intensive discussions on key global and continental issues, including xenophobia, regional integration, governance reforms, and the ratification of the Samoa Agreement. While noting that the debates also highlighted the need for stronger financing mechanisms and faster ratification processes to enhance the effectiveness of the OACPS framework.

He then mentioned that the defining feature of the assembly was its inclusive approach, with dedicated Youth, Women, and Business Forums ensuring broad participation in shaping policy discussions.

Explaining that these platforms emphasised the importance of youth empowerment through innovation, increased participation of women in agricultural value chains, and stronger public-private partnerships to drive economic growth between Africa and Europe.

He noted that beyond formal sessions, the programme incorporated cultural exchanges, networking events, and excursions showcasing the countries rich heritage. These engagements further reinforced the country’s image as a welcoming destination capable of blending diplomacy with cultural diplomacy, thereby strengthening its international appeal.

Xaba said as the assembly concluded, participating parliamentarians tabled resolutions aimed at enhancing governance, promoting sustainable development, and deepening economic and strategic cooperation between Africa and the European Union.
