SOCCER – Nsingizini Hotspurs head coach Mandla Qhogi insists his youthful side can lift the 8Bet Trade Fair Cup today, even with several key players absent on international duty.
“Our mandate was to reach the final, and I am happy we have been able to achieve that, especially with the players we have and those who are missing,” Qhogi said after guiding Hotspurs past Manzini Sea Birds on penalties in a tense semi-final.
The coach praised the performance of the youngsters handed opportunities to shine.
“Playing with the youngsters we gave a chance to is great for the team. The boys have done us proud and we are happy as a squad,” he added.
Qhogi revealed that tactical discipline was key to their semi-final success.
“The game was very tactical from our side. We knew the opponent would run at us, so we focused on stabilising from the back and controlling possession. You saw we dominated for most of the game,” he said.
Looking ahead to the final clash with Green Mamba, Qhogi remained confident.
“The boys will decide what they want, but as a team, we are very happy and definitely intend to lift this trophy. Green Mamba are a stubborn team who like to play fast and keep possession, but we will ensure we dominate and make them work for every opportunity,” he said.
Despite missing four injured players and key stars representing the national team, Qhogi says squad depth will be crucial.
“We do not worry about what other teams are doing. Our squad may not be complete, but it has been tested and we are very happy with it,” he added.
Green Mamba coach Bongani Mhlongo acknowledged the challenge ahead.
“We have quality players, and we will need to strategise better. We want to show improvement in the final fight for the trophy,” he said.
Today’s final promises a thrilling showdown as Hotspurs aim to confirm their rise as title contenders, while Green Mamba hunt for early season silverware.
