The kingdom is among the countries privileged to have access to the Mahindra Karoo range.

According to Mahindra Eswatini sales personnel Alex Dlamini and Nosipho Nhlebela, these vehicles are the latest release from the brand.

They have emerged as an intriguing and practical offering in the midsize pickup segment, particularly appealing to buyers seeking a blend of rugged capability, everyday usability and distinctive character. Built on Mahindra’s proven Pik Up platform, the Karoo variants bring a unique identity and purposeful design that stand out in a crowded field, especially for those who want a capable bakkie without paying the price of premium rivals.

At the heart of the Karoo range is Mahindra’s mHawk 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, producing around 103 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. This engine, paired with a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission in most Karoo models, offers a good balance of tractability and efficiency suitable for both work and leisure.

The diesel powertrain delivers strong low-end torque, making it well suited to towing and load-lugging duties, while the automatic gearbox ensures smooth shifts and ease of use in everyday traffic.

The Karoo line-up includes several special editions; Karoo Dusk, Karoo Dawn and Karoo Storm, each with its own visual theme and equipment package. The Karoo Dusk, finished in black with blue decals, emphasises a bold, stealthy presence. The Karoo Dawn’s sandy beige exterior with orange highlights caters to those who favour a more rugged, outdoors-inspired look. The Karoo Storm stands out with a light blue paint scheme and striking black-and-grey graphics that evoke dynamic desert skies.

All three models share rugged enhancements such as heavy-duty off-road suspension, specialist off-road tyres, front and rear steel bumpers, and enhanced recovery points features that genuinely bolster the bakkie’s off-road readiness.

Inside, Mahindra has significantly improved comfort and technology compared with earlier Pik Up trims. The Karoo range benefits from a larger 9-inch HD infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, replacing the older 7-inch unit. The inclusion of built-in navigation adds everyday convenience for longer journeys and rural driving. Leather upholstery across the special editions enhances the cabin’s overall feel, while practical elements such as rubberised load bins and durable floor mats reinforce the vehicle’s working-class roots.

On the road, the Karoo pickups perform admirably for their class. The turbodiesel engine is not focused on outright speed, but its torque delivery allows for confident overtaking and steady cruising essential qualities when carrying heavy loads or towing. Real-world fuel consumption figures tend to be respectable for a 4×4-equipped bakkie and the automatic gearbox contributes to a relaxed driving experience, particularly in urban and motorway conditions.

Where the Karoo truly shines is in its practicality and adaptability. With a strong payload capacity, robust build quality and features tailored to real-world use, it suits both traditional work requirements and lifestyle buyers seeking an adventurous, off-road-ready vehicle without compromise.

The inclusion of recovery points and enhanced suspension hardware inspires confidence when tackling rough terrain, while the warranty and service plans typical of the range add further peace of mind. However, the Karoo’s more traditional ladder-frame architecture and conservative interior layout may feel less modern when compared with some newer rivals. Storage solutions and cabin ergonomics, while functional, remain utilitarian rather than luxurious, a reflection of the bakkie’s focus on capability over premium refinement.
