Parents of the six learners expelled from Dvokolwako High School over alleged same-sex relationships are expected to appear before other parents this week.

The purpose of the meeting will be for the parents to plead that the expelled pupils be allowed back in class.

This was revealed by the Chairperson of the school committee, who only identified himself as Gama.

He said this when asked if the six pupils were back in class as per the directive of Hhohho Regional Education Officer (REO) Dr Nathi Nkambule.

The six girls making up three couples were shown the gate last Monday after parents of learners attending the same school made the resolution.

This was after the learners were found to be in same-sex relationships, and after they had allegedly confessed their sexuality before their own parents and school authorities.

Yesterday, Gama said he had no authority to tell the rest of the parents, especially those who had voted for the expulsion of the six pupils, to allow them back to the school.

He said what was best was for the REO to personally relate this directive to the parents during a meeting that will be convened soon.

Gama said the purpose of the meeting was to allow the parents to explain themselves and ask for forgiveness from the broader parent body.

The chairperson said the decision to remove the learners was not unprecedented, as other pupils had previously been expelled by parents following misconduct.

He said parents had in the past agreed that firm and decisive action should be taken against ill-behaviour among learners.

“Other learners have been expelled before by the parents for wrongdoing as per a collective agreement that had been made earlier,” Gama said.

The issue has sparked widespread debate, with some members of the public arguing that the pupils should be allowed back into school, while others insist that the school and parents were justified in taking disciplinary action.

The outcome of this week’s meeting is expected to determine whether the matter can be resolved amicably or whether further intervention will be required.
