Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla has commended the significant growth made by the country in infrastructure development over the past 57 years since gaining independence.


She also commended His Majesty King Mswati III for championing women inclusion in leadership positions as well as equality in the country.

Dladla said when the country gained its independence, she was a month away from turning 11 years. She said in as much as she was still young and could not remember the experience, her mother told her and her siblings.

She said growing up, she witnessed firsthand all the achievements the country has made over the past 57 years.

Independence Journey

She acknowledged that before independence, there was not much development in the country, but this swiftly changed once the country gained independence.

She stated that one of the major developments was in road infrastructure as Eswatini was now rated among the top five African countries with best quality roads.

“Looking at the journey since 1968, it is amazing how much the country has developed,” she said.

The DPM said it was also a blessing for the nation that His Majesty was also born on the same year the country gained independence, meaning that there would always be a double celebration each year for Emaswati.

Dladla said she was proud and thankful to God for blessing her and being able to witness the country’s 57th Independence Day celebration.

Regarding the strides made by the country in empowering women over the years, she said as a female DPM, she was proud to see more and more women being empowered and promoted to leadership positions.

She also commended His Majesty for championing women inclusion in leadership positions and politics as most women in Parliament were appointed by the King.

“We have seen women being appointed into leadership positions and excelling in their jobs. It is critical to include more women and promote equality in the country,” she said.

Dladla also encouraged the younger generation to continue empowering and educating themselves as they were the future leaders of the country.

“I would like to encourage the younger generation to apply themselves and be patriotic,” she said.

She also mentioned that women played an important role in maintaining peace and harmony in the country, hence the need to empower them.
