THE Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has made a significant breakthrough in its investigation into the daring overnight robbery at the EswatiniBank Manzini branch, with the arrest of Thembela Philiswa Ferreira, aged 36.
Police issued an official wanted notice yesterday morning featuring Ferreira’s photograph, which was swiftly updated to confirm his detention.
The prominent ‘ARRESTED’ overlay on the poster signals a rapid and successful conclusion to the public appeal for information on the suspect, who hails from Timbutini and is a Liswati national.
Ferreira, described in earlier appeals as a person of interest and reportedly one of the most wanted individuals linked to the case, was taken into custody following what sources described as effective intelligence-led operations.
His arrest is seen as a major step forward in a high-profile investigation that has gripped the kingdom.
The incident occurred at the EswatiniBank’s Manzini branch, where thieves made off with a substantial sum; reports indicated that well over E2 million was stolen in a calculated overnight heist.
The robbery involved sophisticated tactics and had been described by authorities as one of the more audacious crimes in recent memory. Police have been pursuing multiple suspects, with Ferreira emerging as a key figure after investigators received information tying him to the vicinity of the bank.
He was previously highlighted as a frequent visitor to the area, raising suspicions that led to his formal identification as a suspect.
This latest arrest builds on earlier progress in the case, where other individuals of interest had already been named or detained. The REPS has been praised for its persistence, deploying coordinated teams and appealing directly to the public for assistance through dedicated hotlines.
In the updated notice, authorities provided contact details for investigating officers, including D. Makhanya, Inspector Vilane, and Sergeant Ayanda Dlamini, urging anyone with further information to come forward. Emergency channels, including the 999 service and the WhatsApp line on 7999 1000, remain active for public tips.
Acting Deputy Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Inspector Mazwi Ndzimandze said such breakthroughs underscored the service’s commitment to tackling serious organised crime and recovering stolen assets.
The swift action, coming shortly after the renewed public appeal, is expected to bolster community confidence in law enforcement’s ability to deliver justice.
Ferreira remains in custody as investigations continue. Police have indicated that they are still seeking additional information that could help piece together the full circumstances of the robbery, including the roles of any accomplices and the whereabouts of the stolen funds.
Residents of Manzini and Timbutini have expressed relief at the news on social media, viewing the arrest as a positive signal that no one is beyond the reach of the law. The police have thanked members of the public for their vigilance and cooperation, which proved instrumental in this outcome. As the investigation progresses, further updates are anticipated.
